Economic News

* India’s Oil Import Bill Could Rise $5–10 Billion on 50% Cut in Russian Crude: Mehrotra: India’s annual oil import bill could rise by $5–10 billion if it cuts Russian crude purchases by 50%, economist Santosh Mehrotra said. He warned that replacing discounted Russian oil with costlier supplies could lift inflation by around 0.3 percentage point, while also putting pressure on the rupee and current account deficit. Mehrotra noted that any disruption to Russian crude could push global oil prices higher, further impacting fuel costs and inflation. On India-US trade talks, he urged New Delhi to negotiate cautiously, noting that proposed US tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian energy have not yet taken effect and could still allow room for exemptions.

Global News

* Japan’s Q2 Growth Slows to 1.1%, Misses Expectations: Japan’s economy grew at an annualised 1.1% in Q2, slowing sharply from 1.9% in the previous quarter and falling short of the 2% market expectation, as weak business investment and stagnant consumer spending weighed on growth. Capital expenditure declined 1.2%, while private consumption remained flat amid persistent cost-of-living pressures. The fallout from the Iran conflict also pushed up energy costs and disrupted supply chains. Exports provided some support, contributing 0.5% to growth on strong US demand for hybrid vehicles and semiconductor equipment. Despite the weaker growth, markets are pricing in an 80% probability of a Bank of Japan rate hike on September 18.
