Economic News
• Tight liquidity and rising oil prices push up short-term rates and bond yields: ICICI Bank reported that banking system surplus liquidity declined to Rs50,000 crore (0.2% of NDTL) as of October 23, driven by GST payments and higher cash reserve requirements, prompting the RBI to inject Rs 1 lakh crore through a seven-day VRR auction. Consequently, the average call rate rose to 5.70% from 5.48%, while the market repo rate increased to 5.66% from 5.37%. Rising crude oil prices and inflation concerns also weighed on government bonds, with the Centre’s borrowing cost rising 20 bps to 7.60% and the bid-to -cover ratio falling to 1.9. The 10-year benchmark yield is expected to trade between 7.40% and 7.60%, while month-end government spending and Rs 35,400 crore in securities maturities could ease liquidity pressures.
Global News
• South Korea’s Q3 GDP growth beats estimates at 1.0% on AI-driven chip exports and investment, despite weak consumer spending: South Korea’s GDP grew 1.0% QoQ in Q3 2026, beating market expectations of 0.7% and accelerating from 0.6% in Q2, driven by the global AI boom that boosted semiconductor exports and investment. Exports rose 2.3%, while facility investment increased 4.1%, led by semiconductor manufacturing equipment, although private consumption declined 0.2% due to weaker financial services and lower car purchases amid automaker strikes. The Bank of Korea expects exports and investment to remain strong, with GDP growth potentially reaching 3.7% in 2026 if Q4 growth matches Q3. However, weak household spending, subdued consumer sentiment and restrictive interest rates remain key concerns, despite the central bank maintaining a hawkish stance on robust export momentum.

Global Debt Market:
U.S. Treasury yields were flat on the day Monday as investors look ahead to the central bank’s interest rate decision and await a flurry of economic data this week. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield was up around 1 basis point at 4.99%, and the 30- year Treasury bond yield was unchanged at 5.31%. The 2-year Treasury note yield ticked 2 basis points higher to 4.7%. Investors are keenly anticipating the main event of the week, which will be the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision on Wednesday. Traders are pricing in an over 90% chance that policymakers will hold interest rates steady at the current target range of 3.75% to 4%, per the CME FedWatch Tool. Deutsche Bank analysts said they expect there to be more interest in Chairman Kevin Warsh’s comments following the decision, with focus on how the Fed “balances stillelevated inflation and solid growth against the recent tightening in financial conditions.” “The broader message is still likely to be hawkish: our economists think recent inflation data support the case for further tightening over time, even if the Fed chooses to pause this week,” the analysts said in a Monday note. They added that Warsh is expected to clarify that tight financial conditions are not a substitute for higher policy rates. Investors will also closely monitor the personal consumption expenditures index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, which will be released on Thursday. Other economic data to be published this week includes the weekly ADP Employment Change and durable goods Orders for September on Tuesday; weekly initial jobless claims on Thursday; and further employment data on Friday.
