Global News
• China’s factory activity improves in August, but remains in contraction amid weak domestic demand and services: China’s manufacturing activity improved in August, with the official PMI rising to 49.8 from 49.2 in July, supported by stronger output and new orders, but remained in contraction for the second consecutive month. Meanwhile, the non-manufacturing PMI stayed at 49.0, its weakest level since December 2022, highlighting persistent weakness in services, construction, domestic consumption, investment and the property sector. While exports, particularly AI-related shipments, continued to support growth, the uneven recovery and weak business confidence underscore deepening economic imbalances, with policmakers likely to rely on targeted fiscal support rather than major stimulus.

Global Debt Market:
US Treasury yields were little changed early Friday as global investors await the highly anticipated keynote speech from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole. The 10-year Treasury note was less than 1 basis point higher, at 4.676%, at 4 a.m. ET. The 30-year Treasury bond yield was less than 1 basis point higher at 5.199%, while the yield on the 2-year Treasury note was flat at 4.229%.Warsh’s remarks will be closely monitored for any indication of his views on how monetary policy should respond to persistently above-target inflation, or the impact of rising long-term borrowing costs. The Fed chairman, who took office in May for a four-year term, has so far shared very little commentary on the state of the economy or policy outlook. Some market watchers believe he will remain light on details about the path he expects ahead and focus on broad themes.
