FII AND DII WEEKLY ACTIVITY: 10-10-26

Benchmark indices traded in a range with high volatility as the Nifty snapped its eight-week decline and closed marginally higher. The RBI raised rates by 25 basis points and shifted its stance to “calibrated tightening,” while the Nifty formed a fresh 52-week low as Brent crude sustained above $100, US bond yields moved higher and FII selling continued. Continued weakness in the rupee further weighed on investor sentiment. The index started the week on a positive note and formed a high of 22,776 on Tuesday’s session. However, a sharp decline on Thursday saw it breach the previous week’s low and form a weekly low of 22,180. A pullback on Friday helped the Nifty close the week at 22,520.45, higher by 0.4%.

On the flows front, FIIs stayed net sellers for the eighth straight week, offloading a heavy Rs. 302.94bn. DIIs extended their buying streak with net purchases of Rs. 303.13bn, fully absorbing the FII selling and enabling Friday’s pullback. Month-to-date, FIIs have sold a net Rs. 397.79bn against DII net buying of Rs. 403.55bn, with the Nifty down 0.44% from its September-end close of 22,620.45. Over the past eight weeks, FIIs were net sellers throughout while DIIs remained consistent net buyers, limiting the Nifty’s 7.57% slide from 24,366.00 to 22,520.45.

Going ahead, relentless FII selling and global headwinds are likely to keep markets volatile, though record domestic institutional buying should continue to limit the downside. Market participants will closely track US and Indian inflation data, US bond yields, Brent crude prices and developments in US-Iran geopolitical tensions in the coming week.
